Rose watches Boozer’s big night against Magic

Carlos Boozer scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds, John Lucas scored 20 points off the bench and the Chicago Bulls beat the Orlando Magic 85-59 on Monday night.

Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau also became the fastest coach in NBA history to earn 100 career victories. The Bulls won for the fifth time in six games.

They also improved to 3-1 over the past four games playing without guard Derrick Rose, who continued to nurse a sore groin.

Dwight Howard had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Magic, who had 19 turnovers.

The Magic have lost three of their last four since posting a three-game win streak. They’ve also now gone six straight quarters without scoring at least 20 points.

Turnovers were a factor in the Magic’s loss to the Bulls in early January and they again played a huge role Monday as Orlando’s miscues yielded 25 of Chicago’s points. By comparison, the Bulls’ 16 turnovers only led to seven points for the Magic.

Orlando trailed by double-digits for most of the second half, before cutting a 15-point Bulls’ first-half lead to 12 entering the fourth quarter as its early turnover issues began to subside.

The Bulls’ offense was steady down the stretch, though, and Joakim Noah’s three-point play on a two-handed dunk over Glen Davis with 6:54 to play in the game put them up 72-52 to end any comeback hopes.

The Bulls took advantage of the Magic’s initial turnover issues to build a 48-33 halftime advantage.

Orlando opened the game with a 5-0 spurt, but Chicago got hot at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 10-0 run that included three straight 3-pointers by Lucas.

Boozer’s 16 first-half points paced a Bulls’ team that shot 50 percent (20 for 40) in the opening 24 minutes, while the Magic connected on just 38 percent of their attempts (14 for 36).

Chicago also scored 16 points off 11 Magic turnovers and scored 22 points in the paint.

NOTES: Rose missed his 14th game of the season after sitting just six games in his first three NBA seasons combined. He appeared in 81 regular-season games in two of those seasons. … Howard received his ninth technical of the season in the third quarter. … Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said that the focus for the Magic over their final 19 games would be on reducing turnovers and building better defensive habits. “We’re just not building solid habits and making good enough decisions,” he said. “And at the end of the day, you are going to hit the playoffs and you are going to be left with your habits. We’re running out of time. We have 5 1/2 weeks and it’s time.” … The Magic dropped to 7-8 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Bulls Vs. Magic Final Score: Chicago Holds Orlando…

Read More: Carlos Boozer (F – CHI), Derrick Rose (G – CHI), Tom Thibodeau (A – BOS), Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls didn’t have reigning MVP Derrick Rose against the Orlando Magic tonight, but they didn’t need him. Coach Tom Thibodeau’s crew set the franchise record for the fewest points allowed by an opponent during a, 85-59 win at the Amway Center.

Power forward Carlos Boozer led the Chicago attack, finishing with 24 points, 13 rebounds and four steals on 12-of-18 shooting. Reserve point guard John Lucas III stepped up his game again without Rose, scoring 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting that included four makes from three-point range. Luol Deng had 14 points for Chicago on 5-of-13 shooting from the field in the win.

Center Dwight Howard led the Magic with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Anderson had 10 points for the Magic in the loss.

Orlando finished just 24-for-68 from the field (35.3 percent) and shot 4-of-20 from three point range.

The win improves Chicago to 38-10 and makes coach Tom Thibodeau the quickest head coach ever to 100 victories.

Bulls-Magic Preview: Local Fan's Opinion

Following a disappointing showing against the Portland Trailblazers, the Chicago Bulls bounced back with an 89-80 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. It wasn’t pretty at times as the Bulls connected on only 40 percent of their field goal attempts and scored just 11 points in the first quarter. One of the few bright spots for Chicago was C.J. Watson. He scored 20 points and did a good job of getting to the basket in the decisive third quarter despite playing on a sore ankle. The next opponent on the schedule is the Orlando Magic, a team that beat us at home not too long ago. While Derrick Rose is expected to miss his fourth straight game due to a groin injury, there is still hope the Bulls can pull this one out. Here is what the Bulls need to do in order to make the Magic disappear.

Let’s start on the defensive end of the floor. The Bulls need to play Howard one-on-one and live with whatever comes with doing so. If he puts up 35 points and grabs 25 rebounds, so be it. The reason why I say that is because Howard cannot beat us alone. One of the main culprits in the loss to Orlando in the previous meeting was we gave up way too many open shots from long-range. If we do a better job of closing out on the Magic’s perimeter shooters, we will avoid putting ourselves in an early hole, which was the case last game when the Magic led 37-22 after the first quarter.

With regards to offense, we have been settling for too many jump-shots over the past two games and not forcing the opposing team to defend us five-on-five. Yes, I know a lot of that has to do with Rose being out of the lineup, but we still have to do a much better job of getting good shots. Being that Watson cannot carry the team consistently, there needs to be more emphasis on starting the offensive down on the block first. If the Bulls do a good job of getting points inside the paint, it will create better looks for our perimeter players, thus enabling the offense to play with more efficiency.

Orlando Magic end Bulls' 8-game win streak

NBA: Orlando Magic puts end to Chicago Bulls'…

The Magic had to beat the best to overcome the sting of losing to the worst.

Dwight Howard had 29 points and 18 rebounds to lead Orlando to a 99-94 win over the host Bulls on Thursday, snapping Chicago’s eight-game winning streak.

The Magic bounced back from a 100-84 loss at Charlotte, beating the Bulls two nights after losing to the Bobcats, who sport a league-worst 5-32 record. Despite the loss, Chicago’s 33-9 mark is tops in the Eastern Conference.

“We stepped up tonight and everybody played great,” Howard said. “I think it was our defense that got us the lead early in the game. We forced a couple of turnovers and we were able to run and get easy buckets.

“We have to play that brand of

basketball to compete for a championship. We can’t fall back and have a game like Charlotte and expect to be in the same breath as Chicago and Miami.”

Chicago twice overcame double-digit deficits and led 91-89 with 2:56 to play after Derrick Rose passed to Carlos Boozer for a jumper.

Orlando responded with an 8-1 run started by Jameer Nelson’s lob to Howard for a vicious, two-hand dunk out of a timeout. Ryan Anderson hit a 3 and a pair of free throws in the decisive rally.

“There is some luck to it,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “Towards the end, we had two guys laying on the ground and they don’t get a basket. Our offensive rebounding down the stretch was big.”

Boozer led the Bulls with 26 points. Rose added

17 points and nine assists, but shot just 6 for 22 from the field. The Bulls missed a number of layups and open 3-pointers down the stretch.

“We came out kind of sluggish, got ourselves into a hole and couldn’t dig ourselves out,” Rose said.

Designated sharpshooter Kyle Korver hit just 1 of 7 from long range, including a misfire from the corner after defender Jason Richardson fell down, leaving him unguarded.

“I thought at least three of them were in the bottom of the bucket,”

Korver said. “You’ve got one play where everybody falls down and it goes in and out. I need to come through on those.”

Richardson scored 18 points and hit four 3-pointers for the Magic.

Suns 96, Mavericks 94: Jared Dudley scored 12 of his 18 points in a third-quarter comeback as host Phoenix held on to beat Dallas, the Suns’ first victory over the Mavericks in nine tries.

Grant Hill scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half for Phoenix but missed two free throws with 15.4 seconds left. Dallas had two chances after that, but Rodrigue Beaubois missed a driving layup, then couldn’t hit an 18-foot jumper at the buzzer.
